Best Stores For Plus Size Shopping

plus size clothes

Many stores offer a few plus size outfits or separates, often at prices slightly higher than the smaller sizes. This can really plummet a plus size woman’s already fragile self-esteem, and wreak havoc with a tight budget. After all, we do not have deeper wallets just because we wear bigger clothes, right?

That said, some stores charge about the same price for plus size clothes, but ruin self-esteem by putting the bigger sizes in a different part of the store. We feel self-conscious and/or embarrassed to have to walk to the other side of the store, where only the bigger sizes are kept. For some, it is preferable to pay the slightly higher price for the clothes offered in the same section in bigger sizes in a different store than to have to use the other side of the store instead.

Some stores cater only (or mostly) to plus size women. These, depending on price, are some of the best places to go for trendy plus size fashions, since many carry everything from pajamas to dress clothes and everything in between. While some are significantly more expensive than others, brand means a lot to some women, so here is a list of the most popular stores that offer beautiful, hip, and sometimes relatively inexpensive clothing in larger sizes for curvier women:

ROSS. These are normally found in outlet malls, often near stores like Dress Barn, TJ Maxx, Old Navy, and similarly priced department stores. The selection at ROSS is fabulous, and most offer sizes from 0-24 in flattering and trendy styles that look great on curvy bodies as well as the more slender ones. ROSS is one of the best choices for the plus size shopper with a smaller budget, as the average price of most styles is much lower than even chains like Wal Mart.

Dress Barn. While they do keep the larger sizes on the opposite side of the store as the smaller sizes, there is a huge selection of trendy and beautiful clothing for any occasion at Dress Barn. They are one of the more popular women’s clothing stores in the United States, especially for dressy clothes. Their prices are comparable to other leading department stores, but could be a little over the top for the most budget-conscious shoppers.

Lane Bryant. Lane Bryant is one of the most well known places to shop for plus size clothes, and they offer a huge variety of styles for most occasions. They even offer a limited amount of lingerie, bras, and panties that are designed to fit a plus size woman better, too. Prices are very similar to Dress Barn, but they often have awesome clearances at seasons’ end for great deals.

Cato. Much like Lane Bryant, Cato offers a wide selection of plus size clothing at slightly more expensive prices. This is a great choice for career clothing, or for dressier clothes. Sometimes dresses are harder to find here, and the price can be a bit daunting if you were hoping for something to fit better into a budget, but the selection is great. Keep in mind that places like Wal Mart, Old Navy, Target, K Mart and similar stores do offer a few plus size styles, often at prices that are budget-friendly. However, be prepared to do some looking to find them, or get ready to ask someone when you get there, as they are often either mingled with other clothing or in a small subsection amidst the rest of the women’s clothing. Some may charge a little more for the bigger sizes, but the cost is often comparable to the other designers.

Finally, don’t forget that most online stores offer more plus size clothing for women than traditional stores. Shipping can be costly on occasion, but auction websites often offer a lot of new and like new clothing for plus size women on a budget. This is a great idea for women needing clothes in bulk, or for those replacing a wardrobe after gaining or losing a significant amount of weight. It’s also a prudent way to shop when you live in an area that offers little in the way of plus size clothing stores.
