Parties are a great way of spending time with friends, families and to enjoy your favourite snacks, usually not the healthiest. If you are already a plus size person, going to parties that you know will serve calorie rich foods and alcohol, it can make you think twice about going. For the more sensitive event organizers this holiday season, here are some healthy alternatives that you can serve to promote healthy eating:
1. Servings of steamed sweet potato, carrot sticks, and broccoli florets for soft foods. You can also make steamed fruit kabobs and skewers: place chunks of pineapple, strawberries, grapes, bananas, peaches, and kiwi onto bamboo sticks. Serve fresh with a variety of yogurt dips.
2. Cooked fruits are also nutritious and tasty treats. Add some light syrup to apple and pear chunks and serve chilled.
3. For a heavier type of healthy finger food, serve some whole grain crackers or toast sticks with a low fat yogurt dip mixed with the right combination of herbs and spices. You could also serve hummus or baba ganoush as an alternative dip or spread for a more distinct flavour.
4. Use an air popper to pop popcorn and mix them with nuts, almonds, and sprinkle lightly with Parmesan cheese. Popcorn is a whole grain and nuts are rich in monounsaturated fats.
5. Offer vegetarian dishes. Serve Portobello mushroom burgers and season with balsamic vinegar, garlic, olive oil, and cayenne pepper. Add some fixings like lettuce, onions, and tomatoes.
6. No healthy diet is complete without an ample serving of protein. Serve some tofu cooked with pineapple tidbits, mushrooms, and seasoned with pepper and salt.
7. If you can’t resist serving some meat, offer deli meats thinly sliced in small pieces to add more variety to your finger foods.
8. Offer some whole grain pretzels, French bread, and granola bars as fillers to your finger food menu.
9. Go Japanese! Serve some sushi rolls, maki, and teriyaki chicken skewers for an oriental twist.
Don’t forget to allow yourself some fun and relaxation with your friends. Especially in social functions, don’t limit yourself to one corner; mingle with the other guests and don’t let your extra large figure and insecurities stop you from having the time of your life. With parties having healthier menus, what’s there to stop you from having more fun?
